The three Leaders of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands Councils have been shortlisted in The Herald’s Scottish Politician of the Year Awards

Angus Campbell, Gary Robinson and Steven Heddle have been listed jointly in the Local Politician category for their work on the Our Islands Our Future campaign.

Our Islands Our Future has seen the three Councils join forces to press the Scottish and UK Governments for more powers before and after the Independence Referendum in September 2014. Following the launch of the campaign in June, the Scottish Government set up a Ministerial Working Group to look at the issues being raised and the UK Government has also met with representatives from the three local authorities.

A major conference was held in Orkney in September, bringing together leading figures from the political, academic and business worlds to debate the issues raised.

Further information on the campaign is available on the Orkney Islands Council website www.orkney.gov.uk/Council/C/our-islands-our-future.htm. You can also view the official Our Islands Our Future Twitter feed by going to https://twitter.com/islands2014.

The awards are presented at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh on November 14.
