In just two days (14 July), a number of Tall Ships taking part in the Cruise in Company leg of The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International, will sail into Stornoway for a celebration to remember.
While the Tall Ships are expected to arrive from Thursday afternoon, the town has planned a great line up from Monday (11 July) to build momentum for the big event. Events such as the Sail Hebrides maritime festival, where small sailing vessels will take part in a variety of races, will take place earlier in the week on Monday 11 to Wednesday 13 July.
Pipers will welcome the Tall Ships on the afternoon of Thursday 14 July. The following morning, crews, visitors and locals alike can join in a range of events before the Ships depart in a spectacular Parade of Sail on Saturday afternoon (16 July).
Key highlights include the Hebridean Market, which has been specially extended for festival week, maritime history exhibition, cookery demonstrations and the Music at the Marquee concert at the Tall Ships marquee where local bands will perform.
A dramatic night-time laser light display over the harbour on both Friday and Saturday night will be a great way to end each day.
Chief executive of Stornoway Port Authority, Jane Maciver, said: “We wanted to make sure that everyone has a truly memorable time in Stornoway and we’re confident that we’ve put together an exciting and extensive programme of events that will do exactly that.
“The fact that this event coincides with the award-winning Heb Celt Festival means the town will be absolutely buzzing.”
