A crofting forum was held in Stornoway by Highlands and Islands Scottish Conservative MSP Jamie McGirgor last week to discuss the impact of crofting issues.
Commenting after the event Mr McGrigor said: “I was pleased to meet so many crofters from right across the Western Isles and to discuss a broad range of issues and concerns with them, many relating to the new CAP system in Scotland.
“Many crofters were very concerned at the impact on the crofting sector of the proposed low level of support for the third, poorest quality rough grazing category which is very low compared to the proposed support for the best arable land.
“Other issues included the costs of regulation, and grants for fencing and for croft housing which are not nearly as effective as they once were.”
The MSP continued: I will be taking up the key issues with Scottish Government Ministers. I also look forward to repeating this crofting forum in future as it was extremely useful and informative.”
