EXPLORING the worrying rates of diabetes in Scotland is Roddy Munro on BBC Alba’s documentary series Eorpa, aired tonight (Wednesday, October 5) at 8.30pm.

The number of people with diabetes in Scotland is on the increase according to a recent survey from Diabetes UK – and in the Western Isles, the number of people with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes is more than double the national average.

Alarmingly, more younger people are being diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 of the disease. Undiagnosed cases are particularly worrying as going untreated can have serious long term health implications.

Jane-Claire Judson, National Director at Diabetes UK Scotland, said: “People might go 10 years with Type 2 diabetes without knowing they have the condition, in that time they might develop complications of the condition, things like foot disease, sight loss and kidney damage and these are very serious.”
