Communities throughout the islands will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next month with a series of Jubilee Beacons, Street Parties and community gatherings.
The Jubilee Beacons in the Western Isles are being organised by the Western Isles Scouts Association assisted by the Army Cadet Force and the Girl Guides and will be lit at 10.15 pm on Monday 4 June at Arnish Point, Stornoway, Eoropie Beach Ness, the top of the Clisham, Langass and Askernish.
Her Majesty The Queen will light the Jubilee Beacon in central London at 10.30 pm, the same evening. More details of viewing points for the public will be issued next week.
The following events are also taking place within the various communities:
Saturday 2 June from 2-4 pm – Jubilee Tea and Exhibition in the old School Cross.
Monday 4 June at 2.00 pm - Laxdale Street Party in Newpark
Wednesday 6 June from 2.00pm - Newton/Seaforth Road Street Party
Saturday 9 June from 2.00 pm – Cancer Research’s Jubilee Afternoon Tea in the Town Hall Stornoway.
In a joint statement the Lord-Lieutenant Sandy Matheson and the Comhairle Convener Norman A Macdonald said: “We are delighted that communities and groups in the Western Isles have responded by participating in the Jubilee Beacons and community events as part of the national celebrations to commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, next month.
“This is a significant milestone in the life of our Monarch, who has given the nation and the Commonwealth 60 years of faithful and dedicated service. We extend the communities’ good wishes to Her Majesty at this very special time.”
