Firefighters from Achiltibuie, Ullapool and Lochinver attended a fire located on “Tanera Mor” on the Summer Isles last night (Thursday).
Firefighters accessed the island via a local ferry and by lifeboat secured through Stornoway Coastguard.
The Lochinver lifeboat transferred a senior officer and sixteen firefighters, whilst three firefighters attended via the ferry to carry out an initial assessment.
At its peak, the fire was burning on a half mile front with heather and scrub involved.
Fire control staff based in Inverness put in place well rehearsed procedures which ensured an emergency response was despatched quickly to the island.
DCFO Stewart Edgar said, “The uniqueness of this incident goes without saying. Our control staff put well rehearsed emergency procedures in place and our firefighters did an excellent job of bringing the fire under control quickly.
“I am very impressed by our response tonight and I would like to thank all HIFRS staff who were involved. I would also like to express my thanks to the Coastguard, RNLI at Lochinver and Mr Williams for providing the ferry to enable our firefighters to access the island.”
