First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed plans to meet with unions representing the Arnish Yard workforce over fears ab out the future of jobs.
GMA and Unite have requested an urgent meeting in relation to contracts going to overseas yards rather than the three Burtisland Fabrication yards - one of which is at Arnish.
Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan said he had received confirmation that Ms Sturgeon planned to meet workforce representatives and that her office is currently arranging a date.
He said: “I am obviously very concerned to ensure that the site in Arnish has a future and this is something I have raised with both HIE and the Enterprise Minister.
“Arnish is a central plank of the economy in the Western Isles.”
Dave Hulse, GMB National Officer, said: “If contracts are not awarded very soon to Burntisland Fabrications Limited we face the real possibility of these yards being mothballed and jobs lost forever to the industry.”
