The weekend’s flooding was certainly not the first time Stornoway has been underwater due to high tides.

Forty years ago the town was flooded in North Beach and South Beach as well as Bayhead.

The Point area was also cut off due to flooding on the ‘drome and Braighe roads.

Many properties in the town were flooded and the fire brigade had to spend much of one day pumping out affected homes and businesses only to have to repeat it the following day when tides flooded the town once again.

At the time it was reported this was only the second time in 20 years that parts of Stornoway had been unpassable due to flooding.
