A FORMAL application to implement a fuel discount scheme in the islands is to be submitted to the European Commission in the next few weeks.
The scheme would give island motorists a reduction of 5p a litre at the pumps bringing some much needed relief for drivers.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, announced the progress at today’s (Friday) Liberal Democrat conference.
He also revealed he intended to expand the scheme from the original aim and encompass the Clyde islands, including Arran and Skye. Skye, was excluded originally because of its link to the mainland by a road bridge. Mr Alexander said the application would go to the commission in the next few weeks and would have to be agreed by all 27 member states. Mr Alexander said: “It is something that will make a significant difference to island communities, who face the highest fuel prices in the whole country. “I’m very proud that this is something as a government we’ve been able to take forward.” He went on: “As a consequence of the informal discussions we’ve had with the EU Commission, I’m very confident we can deliver.
