The appointment of Free Church minister the Rev Ruairidh Maclean - who was inducted to the Redevelopment Charge in Leverburgh, Harris, five years ago - is to be terminated next month.
This is the recommendation which will come before next week’s General Assembly of the Free Church.
A report by the Home Missions Board of the Free Church of Scotland states that Mr Maclean had reported a slight increase in attendances at the Sunday morning services and an increase in those attending the weekly prayer meeting. The congregation has run the Christianity Explored course with favourable attendances.
However, the Board had carried out a review of the congregation, in consultation with the Presbytery of the Western Isles, in accordance with the legislation.
Their report states: “After careful consideration of the Presbytery’s report and its recommendations, the Board regretfully agreed to terminate Mr Maclean’s appointment at Harris.” Accordingly the Board was recommending to the General Assembly that his appointment be terminated from July 31st, 2013, that the pastoral tie be dissolved from that date, and that every help be given to Mr Maclean to find another ministry post.
The Board is also to request that the General Assembly empower the October Commission of Assembly to receive and dispose of any matters regarding arrangements for future ministry at Harris.
