Last night’s Stornoway Gazette Big Referendum Debate was a great success with 250 people packing Stornoway Town Hall and more than 700 people watching the debate live online.
The event was chaired by Rev Iain D Campbell, a former Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. He was joined on stage by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Johann Lamont, local MSP Alasdair Allan, former Labour MSP Alasdair Morrison, local businessman and fuel campaigner Gordon ‘Diesel’ Maclennan and Stornoway based accountant Roddy Cunningham.
Questions about oil, currency, membership of the EU, crofting and the cost of becoming an independent country were top of the agenda in what was a passionate but controlled debate.
The live streaming attracted more than 1,400 comments and Twitter was also awash with comments including:
“Great night at the @Sygazette debate last night. Well done to all involved!”
“Best #indyref debate of the campaign so far in Stornoway! Well done Gazette and TechMobile”
“Good debate from Stornoway. Thanks #SYGazetteDebate and @revdidcampbell (chair). Pleasant change from the usual shouting matches! #indyref”
A vote was cast as the audience left the town hall and the results will be revealed in this week’s Stornoway Gazette out on Thursday 4th September.
Also keep looking out on the Stornoway Gazette website for footage from the event which will be posted over the coming days.
