The Stornoway Gazette’s Weather Correspondent Dr Eddie Graham from Lews Castle College is in South Africa this week on a research trip.
He is spending eleven days there initially visiting the South African Astronomical Observator (SAAO) in Cape Town and then heading north east to the South African Large Telescope (SALT) at an altitude of 2000m in the mountains of the Great Karoo desert.
There he will be teaching African summer school students all about weather and astronomy, as well ast taking part in the SASKA (“Search for An Astronomical Site in Kenya”) discussions to help choose the best candidate sites for monitoring in Kenya.
