The shortlists for the prestigious Highlands and Islands Media Awards have been announced and finalists now face a tantalising wait to find out who has scooped the trophies.

Judges had the onerous task of assessing 108 entries in 11 sections covering newspaper, online and broadcast news stories and features, as well as the year’s top photographs.

The winners will be announced at the Highlands and Islands Press Ball and Media Awards, to be held on Friday, 5 February 2016 at the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness.

From the Western Isles the Stornoway Gazette’s sports reporter Eric Mackinnon has been shortlisted for ‘Sports Reporter of the Year’ and the Loch a Tuath News has been shortisted in the ‘Community Newspaper of the Year’ category.

Gordon Fyfe, chairman of the Highlands and Islands Media Awards judging panel, said: “We were delighted at the high number of entries again his year and with the quality of stories and photographs submitted.

“As with previous years, the standard was exceptionally high and it meant the judges had some difficult decisions to make.

“I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to enter and demonstrate again that there is a high quality of work being carried out in the region.

“Congratulations to all those who have made the shortlists and we look forward to revealing the winners in February.”
