Seven companies from the Highlands and Islands are grasping the opportunity to give Europe and beyond a flavour of what they have to offer when they showcase their produce at the European Seafood Exposition 2012 in Brussels.

Products from Hebridean Smokehouse based in North Uist have been shortlisted in the Seafood Prix d’Elite new product competition which is announced at the world’s largest seafood fair on April 24-26. The competition recognises the finest seafood products developed by companies over the past year for the retail and foodservice markets in Europe.

The Scottish Seafood Exposition attracts around 24,000 buyers from all around the world and features stands from over 1600 exhibitors. It provides key opportunities for businesses to set out their stalls on an international stage and to develop commercial links with the seafood industry.

Sales in excess of £30 million were anticipated from attendance at the trade show in 2011 (up from £14.4 million).

Iain Sutherland from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) will be attending the event. He said: “The Highlands and Islands is home to some of the finest seafood on this planet. The number of Highlands and Islands companies which return, year on year, to exhibit at the European Seafood Expo is hard proof of the benefits to be won.

“It is vital for producers selling quality seafood to showcase their products to the right audience and so we have an excellent Highlands and Islands representation at this influential event in the seafood industry’s calendar. We wish Hebridean Smokehouse all the best in the Seafood Prix d’Elite competition.”

Hebridean Smokehouse on North Uist is a value added specialist smoker of fish and shellfish, selling into UK and global markets.

General manager, Christopher West from Hebridean Smokehouse, said: “The seafood exposition is an excellent platform to engage with our customers and develop relationships with potential new partners in Europe and further afield.

“We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Seafood Prix d’Elite competition as well as joining the delegation at the largest seafood fair in the world as it attracts thousands of influential people. The event gives us a unique opportunity to highlight the quality of our unique native origin Scottish salmon and promote it in the international marketplace.”

The three products shortlisted by Hebridean Smokehouse Ltd are: Hebridean Peat Smoked Salmon; Hebridean Peat Smoked Scallops; and Bradan is Gruth.

In addition to the three products listed Hebridean Smokehouse are also a finalist in the Product Range category of the Prix d’Elite – this class also includes their Native Origin Scottish Peat Smoked Sea Trout.
