Eilean Siar is proving a popular destination as highlighted recently through the National Geographic Traveler magazine and Buzzfeed website.

Social content website Buzzfeed recently published the ‘Top 9 Happiest Place to Live in Britain’ – and according to figures used from the Office of National Statistics, Eilean Siar is No. 1!

The Western Isles also get a boost this year as they feature in the National Geographic Traveler magazine’s ‘50 Tours of a Lifetime’ 2014. Boasting over 8.5million readers worldwide, the magazine has chosen ‘Wilderness Walking: The Outer Hebrides and Skye’ – operated by Aviemore-based company wilderness scotland – as the only UK entry in the prestigious list this year.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Geographic Traveler, which has always looked at the world through the lens of culture, nature and history,” said Norie Quintos, the magazine’s executive editor.

“The tours we selecte go beyond destination to add meaning and context.”

The Wilderness Walking: The Outer Hebrides and Skye offers participants a six-day walking tour, starting in Inverness and taking in the coastlines, glens and hills of Harris, Skye and Scalpay.

The Walking tour is placed alongside adventures like exploring voodoo rituals in Benin (Ghana); kayaking Venice’s canals and barrier islands;, and wolf-watching in Montana.
