The six Lewis Chessmen who are coming ‘home’ to the isles for the opening of the brand new museum at Lews Castle have been revealed.

Preparing to return to the Western Isles where they were discovered more than 150-years ago are a King, Queen, bishop, knight, warder and pawn.

Carved from ivory, specifically walrus tusk, the chessmen were found in 1831 and have been dated as 12th century.Figures from the Lewis Chessmen have only previously been displayed on the islands on a short-term basis but they will go on permanent display as part of a loan agreement between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the British Museum.
