Accepting a call from Back

The Rev Calum Iain Macleod, minister of Barvas Free Church for the past seven years, yesterday (Tuesday) accepted a call from Back Free Church.

The call came before a meeting of the Western Isles Presbytery of the Free Church held at Carnish in North Uist. It was the first time that an ordinary meeting of Presbytery was held outwith Stornoway.

The Back congregation has been vacancy since August last year when their minister, the Rev Dr Iain D Campbell accepted a call to Point Free Church.

Mr Macleod (38) is a native of Scalpay. After attending the local school, the Sir E Scott School in Harris and the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, he undertook a Business Studies course at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic College in Skye.

He then became the project manager at the 700,000 Visitor Centre at the Calanish Stones on the west side of Lewis and of the 1.2 million project to restore six traditional Blackhouses at Garenin.

He then took a BA degree in Rural Development at Lews Castle College and then felt a call to enter the ministry. He studied at the Free Church College in Edinburgh where he graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree. He is a former Moderator of the Western Isles Presbytery.

Calum's wife Murdina comes from Skye and they have a family of three girls.

The induction to his new charge at Back will take place on Tuesday, August 10. The Rev Dr Iain D Campbell was appointed as Interim Moderator for the Barvas congregation.
