Archaeological excavation in Uig
.
A team of Archaeologists from Durham University are currently on site at Tràigh na Beirigh, also known as Reef Beach, in Valtos, Uig.
Among one of the earlies sites found on the islands the team, lead by Dr Mike Church, have uncovered an open air shell midden containing over 10 species of shell, bones from hares, birds and fish as well as stone tools.
The site dates back some 6100 – 6400 years to the Mesolithic period.
There is an open day on Saturday 15th of September for anyone interested in visiting the site that stands to the left hand side of the beach on the rocks.
Dr Church will also be giving a talk in the Uig Community Centre on Monday 17th September at 7.30pm.
And see next week’s Stornoway Gazette for more photos of the site and more on what the team have uncovered.
