WESTERN Isles MSP Alasdair Allan has welcomed news that Arctic Convoy veterans are to be awarded a medal.
Dr Allan has welcomed news that the UK Government has finally accepted the arguments of campaigners and announced that those who served in the Arctic Convoys will receive long overdue recognition.
Dr Allan commented: “Those who served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War have often been overlooked, but they played a crucial role that is finally being recognised.
“Islanders played a disproportionately large role in that.”
He continued: “Specifically those who served in the Arctic Convoys endured appalling conditions and had a huge part to play in ensuring that Hitler had to face a war on the eastern front during a critical period for the Allied war effort.
“These medals are almost seventy years overdue, which means that sadly many of those who made incredible sacrifices at this time are no longer alive to receive them.
“All those who have campaigned for this recognition for these brave men should be proud of finally achieving success.”
