Award success for St Kilda Opera

ORGANISERS and performers of St Kilda: A European Opera celebrated in Glasgow last night as the production was crowned 'Best Traditional Event' at the Scottish Events Awards.

The inaugural awards ceremony was held at Glasgow Science Centre yesterday (September 4), and St Kilda: A European Opera was nominated for recognition in two categories – 'Best Arts Event' and 'Best Traditional Event'.

And although missing out on 'Best Arts Event', the St Kilda team are over the moon with their award for 'Best Traditional Event'.

Audience Development Manager of Gaelic arts organisation Priseact nan Eilean, who ran the St Kilda project, said: "We are so happy to have won such a prestigious award, especially as we were up against hundreds of different acts and competition of very high standards.

"To win in the first ever Scottish Events Awards was brilliant and the awards ceremony proved a great night at the Glasgow Science Centre, it's a beautiful venue."

St Kilda: A European Opera was a spectacular live theatre and multi-media event featuring vertical dancers, actors, musicians, choirs and Gaelic singers.

It was performed last year on June 22 and 23 in five European venues simultaneously: France (Valenciennes), Belgium (Mons), Germany (Dsseldorf), Austria (Hallstatt) and Scotland (Stornoway) – all linked by live satellite connection to St Kilda and webcast live on the BBC.

And as well as winning the 'Best Traditional Events' award, the project is continuously gaining momentum.

The French version of the opera is set to continue touring this autumn and winter around France and even as far away as Africa.

While closer to home, Scotland will see more developments surrounding a St Kilda Day as part of Homecoming 2009.
