Harris Tweed Hebrides joined three other Highlands and Islands businesses to take part in a five day programme at one of America’s leading business schools – the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) sponsored the companies to participate in the MIT Entrepreneurship Development Program, an intensive executive education course which attracts ambitious entrepreneurs from across the world.

Wester Ross Fisheries from Ullapool, TEFL Scotland Ltd from Dingwall, I Imagine Design from Nairn and Harris Tweed Hebrides took part in the interactive lectures, company visits and pitching competitions in January.

Stephanie Anderson, Development Manager for Entrepreneurship at HIE, said: “MIT is one of the world’s pre-eminent engineering, research and entrepreneurship universities. It is dedicated to advancing knowledge in science and technology, and to enhancing business skills for the commercialisation of innovative ideas, products and the application of new technologies.

“Through this course at the Sloan School, our companies were exposed to world class teaching from the MIT lecturers and entrepreneurs from some of the most innovative companies in the world. MIT brings in the best of the best to share their knowledge and experience so our companies have come away inspired, enthused and equipped with the practical tools and contacts they need to accelerate the growth and success of their businesses back here in Scotland.

“Our businesses had the opportunity to share ideas and network with around 120 entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, MIT faculty and other highly successful businesses. They looked at how to apply the knowledge learned to their own businesses, evaluate new market opportunities and rapidly developed their own entrepreneurial skills in a highly charged environment with a real can-do attitude.”

Having now returned to their businesses HIE will offer ongoing support to the participants to implement what they have learned and grow their businesses successfully.
