Christmas Moldovan style
Unusual metal structures throughout Stornoway town centre turn magically into beautiful Christmas trees as darkness falls.
The decorations created and donated by IM Murray Engineering Ltd for Stornoway Amenity Trust are inspired by projects in the Eastern European country of Moldova.
With strong connections between Moldova and Lewis, lessons have been learned on how to bring a dose of Christmas cheer on a budget.
Charlie Nicolson, Chair of the Amenity Trust has travelled to Moldova many times through his work with Lewis Blythswood and has taken inspiration from their Christmas celebrations.
“I’ve seen them in the capital Kishinev. It’s a very effective but simple idea,” he explained.
“We may use another idea from Moldova next year where you use plastic bottles to make Christmas trees, it is also very effective.”
This year a tree did not have to be cut down in Lews Castle Grounds to provide the town with a Christmas Tree as conveniently local resident Donna Bardon was having one cut down in her garden.
