Crofting debate in Holyrood
.
Independent Highlands and Islands MSP Jean Urquhart has welcomed the positive cross-party response to her Member’s Business debate in the Scottish Parliament on the role of crofting.
MSPs from the SNP, Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, as well as the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Paul Wheelhouse MSP, all contributed to a 45-minute debate that raised current issues within the crofting community.
Commenting on the debate, Jean Urquhart said: “I was pleased to see so many of my regional colleagues, as well as MSPs from further afield, acknowledge the contribution of crofting to Scotland.
“The Minister’s assurances that lessons have been learnt over Raasay, and that the Government was working to fix the current legal issues over decrofting, were also welcome.
“More than anything, I was delighted to see a number of MSPs from outwith the crofting counties in the Chamber to listen to the debate.
“With CAP reform on the horizon, it’s vital that crofting is kept at the front of people’s minds, and I hope that the debate this week will keep up our momentum and ensure that the Government continues to listen to and work with the crofting community.”
