Harris Tweed weavers take spare parts into their own hands
The Association of Harris Tweed Weavers (AHTW) is moving forward with a project to manage and deliver a spares service for the 120 or so weavers currently working in the industry, following approval of Comhairle funding.
Angus Campbell, Leader of the Comhairle said: “The Comhairle continues to support the development of the Harris Tweed sector on a range of issues. I’m delighted to see the Weavers taking the initiative on this particular issue and I wish them well with the project.”
Morris Black, Chairman of the AHTW said, “We have had tremendous support from Comhairle, HIE, LEADER, Harris Tweed Authority and the Kenneth MacKenzie mill to get to this point and we are extremely grateful to them. Confirmation of this final part of the funding package from the Comhairle will now enable the project to proceed immediately.
He added: “The Association feels strongly that it can provide the weaving workforce with improved quality spare parts at a better price than present arrangements. There is a huge amount of technical knowledge and experience amongst the weavers themselves, in fact many weavers have come forward to share information on suppliers they have found themselves over the years and we have also identified several weavers on island willing to manufacture for their peers, small standard component parts, which they have made, tested and found to work well on the loom. It is great to see our industry buoyant again and we all look forward to this continuing.”
He called on all weavers to unite and support the project and to attend a meeting on Tuesday February 19th at 7pm in the Council Chamber, where further details of how the scheme will operate will be provided.
