Major conference dedicated to Scottish Gaelic Song

A MAJOR international conference dedicated to Scots and Scottish Gaelic Song is to be held next month.

Two of Scotland's leading educational institutions - Sabhal Mr Ostaig and The Royal Scottish academy of Music and Drama - will join forces to celebrate the rich traditions of Gaelic and Scots Song.

ran 2010 Sang will take place at Sabhal Mr Ostaig on Skye, from June 1 – 4 and will examine the linguistically distinct strands of Scottish musical heritage, Scots and Scottish Gaelic song traditions today and how we should approach the passing on of our nation's songs.

Leading academics and some of Scotland's foremost musicians and singers will attend the conference.

Delegates will hear from notable Gaelic and Scots academics including keynote speakers Dr Katherine Campbell from the University of Edinburgh, Musicologist Dr John Purser and Morag Macleod, one of the greatest authorities on Gaelic song and folklore of her time.

During the three-day event, there will be more than 20 influential speakers addressing the conference as well as a number of music events.

Representatives from across Scotland will be joined by colleagues from as far afield as Norway and New Zealand.

Professor Boyd Robertson, Principal of Sabhal Mr Ostaig said: "We are delighted to be hosting such a prestigious international conference in partnership with the RSAMD and we look forward to welcoming delegates from across the globe to discuss the rich song traditions of both these language communities."
