Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has lent his support to NHS Western Isles’ plea for more women to attend the Breast Screening Facility as it tours the islands.

Alasdair Allan commented: “While I am pleased to see the Breast Screening Facility visit the constituency, I am concerned to note that some 50 appointments per week were being missed during it’s first month in Lewis.

“As is well known, early detection is a crucial element in increasing the chances of successful treatment. The screening facility, which is in Lewis until the end of April before moving on to cover the other islands in subsequent months, plays a key role in that detection.

“To ensure the maximum benefit from the facility, I would encourage all those with scheduled appointments to contact the Breast Screening Centre if they cannot attend – particularly as spare appointment slots can be offered to women over 70 who are not issued with appointments automatically but are, nonetheless, encouraged to self-refer.”

Mary MacLeod, Convenor of the Lewis & Harris Breast Cancer Support Group, added:

“It is vitally important that women attend their Breast Screening appointments to make sure that, if Cancer is detected, it is picked up as early as possible.

“The vast majority of results from the screening are clear but please attend your Breast Screening appointment... it could just save your life.”
