National award for Hebridean Seaweed Company

HEBRIDEAN Seaweed Company has won the prestigious Marine Business Award at The Crown Estate Business Awards 2010.

The judges Dinah Nicols and Rob Hastings commented: "The Hebridean Seaweed Company is this year's clear winner of the Marine Business Award.

"In just four years the company has grown to be the country's largest industrial seaweed processor.

"It is a true model of sustainability, harvesting a renewable resource in an environmentally responsible way and creating much needed year round jobs on the Isle of Lewis.

"The Company has adopted an innovative approach to blending traditional and modern cutting methods and is strongly committed to quality, and The Crown Estate is delighted to recognise its achievements with this award for excellence."

Martin MacLeod, Managing Director of Hebridean Seaweed Company, said:

"We are delighted to have won this national award. In the few years since the Hebridean Seaweed Company was set up, it has consistently thrived and we're incredibly proud of what our team has achieved.

"Our thanks go to the local community, the staff and agents of The Crown Estate and those with whom we do business for their help and support.

"Seaweed is sought after for a wide range of products, from fertiliser to skincare products, and we look forward to building on our success to date, in a way that continues to benefit the local island community while protecting the environment."

The company was presented with their award at a reception at Lancaster House, St James, Central London, when The Crown Estate's annual results were also announced.
