National Gaelic Conference in Lewis

PREPARATIONS are under way for a National Gaelic Conference to take place in Lewis on September 12.

The event will take place in the island's Breasclete Community Centre and is being jointly organised between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Brd na Gaidhlig. The conference will focus on the way forward for Gaelic.

Councillor Agnes Rennie, Chairperson of the Comhairle's Gaelic Committee, said: "The Comhairle is pleased to be working with Brd na Gaidhlig to organise this important National Conference at a vital time for Gaelic in Scotland.

"The theme is 'The Way Forward for Gaelic' with particular emphasis on the role of communities and young people in revitalising the language.

"The keynote speech at the Conference will be delivered by Linda Fabiani, the Minister for Europe, External affairs, Culture and Gaelic."

Brd na Gidhlig's Interim Chair, Arthur Cormack, added: "The place of communities is central to Gaelic and its revitalisation. Nowadays, 'community' means different things to different people but whether they are in a rural or urban setting, or consist of small groups within larger communities, those who wish to should be able to use Gaelic and should be encouraged to do so.

"Brd na Gidhlig wishes to make the delivery of the National Plan for Gaelic relevant to as many people as possible and one way to ensure this is to engage more directly with communities of all kinds. We are therefore very pleased to be part of a conference in a Gaelic community which we hope will attract people from many communities across Scotand."
