New North Uist school progress

A new school in North Uist is now firmly on the cards as it is to be considered as part of the Comhairle’s Capital Programme 2013-18.

Councillors at Tuesday’s Education and Children’s Services Committee heard that the Community Conversation with residents of North Uist had been very successful with support for a new build primary school to replace Carnish, Lochmaddy and Paible Schools.

Work is to be carried out on identifying a site for the new school with the Clachan area or the existing Paible School site being considered.

The Comhairle has applied for funding through Phase 3 of the Scotland’s Schools for the Future (SSF) programme and if this funding is received, this could represent 20-25% of the capital costs for the school.

Discussions are to continue with Scottish Futures Trust, Scottish Government, North Uist Estate Ltd and the North Uist community on the issues of funding, location and timetable for the provision of the new school.
