New owner for Lewis wind farm site

International Power (70% owned by GDF SUEZ) has secured the rights to develop the Beinn Mhor wind farm, Isle of Lewis.

The onshore wind farm - consisting of 39 turbines - will have an installed capacity of up to 140MW, which is equivalent to providing electricity to approximately 100,000 households.

Preliminary engineering has commenced and construction is expected to start by 2013 with the site fully operational in 2016.

The project includes a commitment to the Western Isles transmission link, which will be commissioned in 2015 and will improve security of supply to the islands.

Steve Riley, CEO & President of IPR GDF SUEZ UK Europe, commented: “This project is a positive step for us in developing a major wind portfolio in Scotland. It will provide a significant boost to the local economy as well as help to secure future UK energy supply from renewable sources.”
