The NHS Western Isles staff magazine, Slàinte, was last week named Scottish Internal Magazine of the Year, at a national magazine awards ceremony in Edinburgh.

Slàinte was one of three internal magazines shortlisted for the award, including NHS National Services Scotland’s staff magazine ‘Pulse’ and Grant’s Whisky’s internal magazine, ‘Spirit’.

After winning the Internal Magazine Award category, Slàinte was also one of a small number of magazines to be shortlisted for the overall national title of Scottish Magazine of the Year (a title won by The Drum magazine).

This year marked the third time that Slàinte was shortlisted for a national PPA (Professional Publishers Association) Scotland award, but the first time that it was awarded the title of Scottish Internal Magazine of the Year (achieving the Highly Commended Award in 2009).

Slàinte, in its current form, was launched in 2007 by NHS Western Isles, and the publication has continued to develop over the years in response to feedback. The quarterly magazine is available to NHS Western Isles staff as well as to the wider community, both in hard copy and online on the NHS Western Isles website. The principal aim of the magazine is to ensure NHS staff are well informed, but the magazine has also developed into an excellent tool to keep members of the public informed about their local NHS services.

NHS Western Isles Communications Manager Maggie Fraser said: “I am absolutely delighted that Slàinte has been named as Scottish Internal Magazine of the Year for 2013. A lot of hard work goes into producing the magazine, and NHS staff from across the organisation contribute articles and photographs for each issue to ensure that their colleagues are well informed. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the magazine and its success.”
