North Uist buy-out meetings

.

.

Public meets will take place tonight and tomorrow to discuss the possibility of a community buy-out of the North Uist Estate.

The first meeting is being held at 7.30pm tonight (Tuesday 13th May) at Paible School with a second meeting to be held at 7.30pm on tomorrow (Wednesday 14th May) in Lochmaddy School.

The 35,000 hectare estate is owned and managed by the Granville family and is home to more than 400 crofters.

A statement from the North Uist Estate said: “We certainly hope that the community will not favour a buy-out and it is by no means certain that there will be sufficient interest in a buy-out for a similar suggestion was put to the crofters a couple of years ago and this met with a negative response.”
