Pentland Road wind farm to start in Spring
The principal suppliers for the Pentland Road wind farm on Lewis have now been selected and construction is due to get underway in early spring.
First on site will be Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK who are in line for the civil engineering works contract. Jones Bros will be calling on local resources to help with the project and will host a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event at the Cabarfeidh Hotel in Stornoway from 2 – 8 pm on Wednesday February 1.

In August the German wind turbine manufacturing company Enercon are scheduled to commence the electrical works in preparation for the turbines which are due on site in September. The project should be fully commissioned in January 2013.
SSE Power Distribution will be installing the underground cable that will connect the new wind farm control building to the main Stornoway sub-station at Marybank. These connection works include a voltage control device known as a STATCOM. This device will help to stabilise the island electricity grid and will pave the way for further community scale wind projects, which, due to the relatively weak island electrical network, could not proceed without it.
Pentland Road Windfarm Director Peter Crone said: “It has been a long and difficult road but we are now very much looking forward to seeing this project constructed on the Pentland Grazings during the course of this year. On behalf of the project company I would like to thank the 600 or more crofting families who have supported this scheme throughout its development, and we particularly thank the Stornoway Trust, whose unwavering support over many years has made this development possible.”
Iain Maciver, factor for the Stornoway Trust said: “Today’s announcement hopefully offers local companies the chance to participate in our Island’s wind farm construction effort as this important milestone brings renewed hope of progress and the prospect of much needed job creation at this time.
“A great deal of effort has gone into planning and designing this project to try and minimize any negative impact it may bring during its establishment and we hope that all those involved with PWF will see reward for their effort and perseverance over the months ahead.”

Are you disillusioned by rising electricity prices, over dependence on the "green" dream [especially uneconomical and inefficient wind farms] and the destruction of our countryside then please register your objection to the Government on http:epetitions.direct.gov.ukpetitions22958 or by googling "petition 22958" and following the link.
