Police confirm identity of man after cliff fall

POLICE have confirmed the identity of the man who died as a result of falling from a cliff yesterday (Monday, January 14th) near Swordale, Point, Isle of Lewis as Donald Murdo MacDonald of Knock, Point, Isle of Lewis.

Police were alerted to Mr MacDonald’s accident by a 999 call made around 3.40pm on Monday.

Police, Stornoway Coastguard helicopter, Scottish Ambulance Service and RNLI lifeboats were all involved with the incident which resulted in Mr MacDonald being airlifted to Western Isles Hospital at around 5pm.

During the fall Mr MacDonald, 48, had sustained severe head injuries and his breathing was compromised. He died shortly after arriving at Western Isles Hospital.

Police are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
