Possible names for new ferry announced

A shortlist of names for the new Ullapool/ Stornoway Ferry was revealed at a public meeting in Stornoway Town Hall on Tuesday (26th).

Guy Platten, Chief Executive of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) explained that because Keith Brown, the Transport Minister, is also the Minister for Veterans they are “keen we have some association with the Arctic Convoys”.

A shortlist of four names has been drawn up but Mr Platten stressed that they are not yet finalised and it will be the public who have the final say through a vote on the CMAL website.

Loch Ewe (where many of the convoys set off) and Cape Wrath (which would have been seen by the convoys as they headed for Russia) are two of the suggestions. Names with a closer link to Lewis and Ullapool have also been shortlisted with Callanish and Lochbroom.

There will also be a competition to win a trip to North Germany to see the new ferry launch – as well as islanders being able to watch the ship being built via a webcam that streams live on the website of the ship builder Flensburger.

Work is still being completed on the final design with building due to begin August/September this year. The ferry will be launched in on the 22nd of February 2014, delivered on the 6th June 2014 and is expected to be in service by July 2014.

For more on Tuesday night’s meeting see this week’s Stornoway Gazette, out today (Thursday 28th).
