A Public Meeting will be held this Tuesday in Stornoway in order to establish a Local Organising Committee for the Royal National Mod which is to be held in the Western Isles in 2016.

The Local Committee, as is common with every Mod, will play an extremely important role in ensuring the event continues to be a major success, with thousands of visitors and competitors expected over the course of a week.

Tuesday’s meeting is being held by Comunn Gàidhealach Leòdhais, the Western Isles branch of Mod organisers An Comunn Gàidhealach.

Chairperson of Comunn Gàidhealach Leòdhais Amy Macaulay said: “We would urge any interested persons to come along to support this national festival of our language and culture. It’s a hugely rewarding week and the Western Isles has an acknowledged track record for hosting the Mod. The community has always played an important role in the Western Isles Mod and we would be delighted to see anyone who is willing to assist in the arranging of this showcase event.”

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Convener Norman A MacDonald urged anyone who has an interest In the Mod to come along. He said: “The Western Isles look forward to hosting The Royal National Mod in 2016, and to welcoming guests to these islands for what we expect will be a memorable celebration of the Gaelic language and culture. The Western Isles has an established tradition of hosting highly successful Mods, some would say the most successful, and we are determined to maintain that success.”

John MacLeod, President of An Comunn Gaidhealach said: “An Comunn Gaidhealach is delighted that the 2016 Mod will return to the Western Isles. The Western Isles has hosted five excellent and enjoyable Mods and we expect the 2016 Mod to be equally successful. The hosting of the Mod will be enhanced by the tremendous new school facilities throughout the Western Isles. In addition the new ferry service to Stornoway will make travel easier and we anticipate welcoming many thousands of visitors to the Western Isles.”

The meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th February in the Council Chambers, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar at 7.30pm.
