Safeguarding Gaelic in schools

The Scottish Parliament's Education Committee has today approved amendments to the Schools (Consultation) Bill which would help to safeguard the position of the Gaelic language in schools.

The amendments, tabled by Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan ensure that when a school is proposed for closure then, where relevant, the impact on the Gaelic language has to be considered.

Dr Allan commented: "These are small but significant amendments to the bill and I'm glad that they got cross party support on the committee, who recognised that parents have a right to ensure that the interests of Gaelic are taken into account.

"The bill has now been approved at Stage 2 and is still subject to its final consideration at stage 3 in the parliament when I would hope these amendments would still stand as I believe they deserve to."
