Search for missing ferry passenger

STORNOWAY RNLI all-weather lifeboat launched last night (Sunday, February 17th) in search of a possible missing person from the Stornoway-Ullapool ferry, MV Isle of Lewis.

A female cyclist, last seen on the ferry at around 4.20pm, did not collect her bike when the vessel docked in Ullapool at 5.15pm.

Stornoway’s Severn class lifeboat the ‘Tom Sanderson’ launched at approximately 7pm and were joined by Lochinver RNLI lifeboat in a search of Loch Broom.

Stornoway Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter took off at 6.47pm to search the area and various other vessels, fishing boats and sea-ribs, aided rescue services.

At 8.30pm police reported to have traced the woman, believed to be in her mid-50s,to a youth hostel in Inverness and the search halted.

Leverburgh Lifeboat was also out on Saturday to assist a vessel which had run aground at the entrance to North Harbour, Scalpay, Isle of Harris.

Stornoway Coastguard requested the assistance of RNLB Royal Thames at 5.07pm hours.

The vessel was refloated on the rising tide, and made its way into Scalpay Harbour, without assistance.

Leverburgh Lifeboat was stood down at 5.57pm and was back on station, refuelled and ready for service at 1907.

This is the station’s 14 shout since it was made operational on 11th May, 2012.
