A severe gale is forecast for the Western Isles tonight (Tuesday).

The Met office has issued an amber warning for the region stating: “A spell of very windy weather with severe gales and locally storm force winds will affect reach northwest Scotland during Tuesday evening and then the far north of mainland Scotland, Orkney and Fair Isle early Wednesday.

“High seas and large waves are also likely along exposed western coasts with over-topping of causeways.

“The public should be prepared for disruption, particularly to travel.”

The Stornoway Gazette’s weather correspondent Dr Eddie Graham said on his blog: “Expect a severe gale on Tuesday night, into Wednesday morning, with mean speeds reaching up to 60mph (force 10). Gusts up to 80-85mph are possible, as the low pressure “sting jet” passes overhead early in the morning.”
