Solo row effort gets underway

ONLY a couple of days behind schedule Niall Iain Macdonald finally dipped his oars in the Minch today.

Leaving from between piers one and two just after midday, the 34 year-old Rapal presenter set off strongly on his 30 hour endeavour to row the Minch solo, and was given a proper fairwell by the Cal Mac ferry who not only blew its horn to mark his departure as it berthed, but also bore a number of pipers who were travelling up for the festival.

These pipers took to deck and piped Niall Iain out of the bay as he began a row that will see him pull oar for two hours before having a 20 minute break - for the entire 43 miles.

His progress will be regularly updated on his website – www.rowtheminch.com – and keep an eye on this site for his comments when he reaches Ullapool pier around 6pm tomorrow night.
