Bays of Harris Steering Group have commissioned a feasibility study to examine the financial viability of a community buy-out.
The 30,000 acre Bays of Harris estate includes Berneray, Northton and much of the east coast of South Harris.
Funding for the study is being provided in the form of a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Investing in Ideas’ division, with HIE’s Land Unit providing an additional £5,000.
A team of consultants headed by Steve Westbrook has been appointed to undertake the feasibility study. Steve has previously carried out similar studies for other community groups in the Highlands and Islands. The study will assess the viability of community ownership. The results of this process will provide residents with the information required to make an informed decision regarding the future of the estate.
A report detailing the study’s findings is due to be completed by the end of the year. Early in 2015, residents will be invited to attend public meetings where the results will be presented and an opportunity given to discuss its contents.
The steering group invite anyone with a Bays of Harris Estate based business venture in mind to get in touch and take advantage of the wide range of expertise available while the feasibility study is taking place.
