Hopes for a birthing pool in Western Isles Hospital may soon be realised with work underway to accommodate the facility.
Currently there is no birthing pool available in the hospital. The only option for expectant mothers is an inflatable pool provided by the Health Board for use in your own home.
One of the issues that has hampered the installation of the device is the impact flooding would have - it was previously estimated that flooding of the maternity ward could put the whole of the hospital out of operation for three weeks.
But now, as part of the modernisation plans for the Stornoway hospital, there is renewed hope a pool will be installed.
An NHS Western Isles spokesperson said: “Recognising the value and importance of being able to choose to use a birthing pool, NHS Western Isles staff have been developing options for the siting of a permanent pool within Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.
“This work is still underway, but it is anticipated that positive progress will be made in the near future.”
