Stornoway Coastguard assist with maritime incident

A fisherman from Aultbea, working on the fishing boat FV Barnacle (CY97) which is Castlebay registered but operating out Aultbea and Gairloch area, has died.

At approximatly 11.27am yesterday morning (13 May 2014), police received notification that HM Coastguard had been called to the incident near Tanera Beag, off the coast of the Summer Isles near Achiltibuie.

It appears the 36 year-old man fell overboard. The Stornoway Coastguard chopper was on exercise in area and quickly recovered him from the water, however he passed away before reaching the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

The Fishermen’s Mission in Scrabster and Stornoway are supporting the man’s family.

He was transferred to mainland today on morning ferry for post mortem in Inverness.

Police enquires are currently ongoing with assistance from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and HM Coastguard.
