Stornoway Marina is No. 8 out of 745 worldwide ports

There are 745 ports, marina and harbours from around the world listed on nautical website www.ports-and-harbours.com.

And Stornoway Marina is one of the Top 10 ports, taking the No.8 spot according to the website’s statistics, which were sent out to ports and marinas last week.

Stornoway Port Authority Chief Executive, Jane Maciver, said: “We are delighted to have been rated so highly by an independent source, particularly as this rating will have been made on the basis of the situation before our new developments were in place.”

She continued: “We believe that the friendly service offered by our front-line staff and the volunteer Cruise Ambassadors plays a crucial role in the experience our customers have and so we acknowledge their efforts.”

The Ports and Harbours site provides a wealth of information about ports, harbours and marinas, alongside businesses and outlets near to them, and is well used by sailors and yachtsmen.

Taking No.1 spot is Carteret Marina in France; and other ports listed above Stornoway include marinas in Croatia, Guernsey, Jersey and Malta. Stornoway Marina is the only Scottish entry in the Top 10, and is placed above Port Chantereyne in Cherbourg, France and Northern Ireland’s Carrickfergus Marina.

Development works continue around Stornoway Port - which welcomed nearly 4,000 visitors in April this year - as following from the installation of new pontoon berths, work is now underway on the town’s main pier to make ready for the new CalMac Stornoway-Ullapool ferry, the MV Loch Seaforth, which is anticipated to start in September.
