Tornadoes in the Sound of Harris

Waiting for Video...

Two tornadoes formed near Pabbay in the Sound of Harris on Tuesday 10th June during a violent thunderstorm with hail.

Dr Eddy Graham, from Lews Castle College UHI, explained that this was followed by severe thunderstorms in the Minch and over North Lewis.

Dr Graham captured a time-lapse movie (above) which shows beaver’s tail cloud above the War Memorial in Stornoway.

He said: “A beaver’s tail cloud is an incipient funnel cloud (from what a tornado develops). You can see the tail pointing downwards towards the ground, but it doesn’t quite form a funnel... though it nearly did!”

Keep up to date with all with Dr Eddy Graham’s weather blog at: uhi-mahara.co.uk/view/artefact.php?artefact=1628&view=598.
