Turin Brakes at the Woodlands

WITH 10 years experience, a couple of Top ten albums, one Top Five single hit and a Mercury Music Prize nomination under their belts, music makers Turin Brakes are going for a first this week as they perform in the Woodlands Centre, Stornoway on Friday, October 2.

"We've never been to Lewis before and we're expecting it to be very beautiful," said Gale Paridjanian, one half of the London Folk duo that is Turin Brakes.

The band began in 1999 when lifelong friends Gale and Olly Knights got together to release their first EP 'The Door'.

Flash forward 10 years and the pair are currently working on their fifth studio album, due for release in early 2010.

Although major commercial success has eluded the pair, they have, in the words of Gale 'kept simmering away' over the last decade, earning themselves a legion of loyal fans and great respect from fellow musicians.

Big fame did knock upon the Turin door in 2003 when single 'Pain Killer' – from second album 'Ether Song' – reached the Top Five position in the UK charts.

But Olly and Gale are more than content with both their music and careers, enjoying the 'hands-on' work and liberating experiences of creating excellent music without major hype.

Their gig at the Woodlands however deserves some major hype and a coup for organisers Beyond and Honcho Promotions.

Tickets for Friday's performance are on sale now at An Lanntair Arts Centre, priced 10.
