Renewed calls have been made for an emergency towing vessel to be available on the West Coast after a stricken cargo ship went adrift off Tiree on Saturday.
Just before 10.30am on Saturday, Stornoway Coastguard was alerted by VHF to the cargo vessel ‘Wilson Gdynia’ which had lost steerage approximately 20 miles west of Skerryvore Lighthouse, South West of Tiree. Stornoway Coastguard located the stricken vessel and requested the Barra RNLI lifeboat to launch. The vessel was transporting wood chips. An emergency towing vessel was sent from Aberdeen to aid the vessel.
The incident has renewed calls for an ETV to be based on the West Coast as was previously the case.
