Comhairle nan Eilean Siar formally opened the new Sgoil an Tairbeirt in Harris yesterday (Tuesday).

Sgoil an Tairbeirt is the first purpose built 3 to 18 school in the Western Isles and the 5th of six new schools in the Western Isles Schools Project to be opened.

The school was opened by former Chair of Education and Children’s Services Mrs Morag Munro at a ceremony with school pupils, staff and around 70 guests. Musical performances and a prize giving were part of the ceremony for the day.

Comhairle Convener and Chair of Sgoiltean Ura, Norman A MacDonald said: “I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the success of this project. I would just like to wish everyone - Headteacher, staff, pupils, parents and indeed the entire community, a successful and happy future in these wonderful new facilities.”

Catriona Stewart Chair of Education and Children’s Services, said: “Our Island chain has six new state of the art schools serving almost 50% of our pupil population. Schools our pupils are proud to be educated in, schools resourced to the best of the Comhairle’s ability in which the Curriculum for Excellence is taught, schools where staff and pupils have facilities amongst the best in the country.”

Cllr Stewart also paid particular tribute to the work of former Councillor Morag Munro describing the former Councillor as ‘a doughty fighter for Harris and all its citizens’ and praising her for playing a key role in achieving the Western isles School Project.

Sir Edward Scott school is thought to have originally opened in August 1891.
