Works completed at Nicolson Institute

Phase II of The Nicolson Institute, comprising demolition of the former school buildings and completion of external works, has been successfully completed.
The new facilities include a bus marshalling area, staff parking, an environmental garden including poly tunnels, Multi-Use Games Area, Support for Learning recreational area and a new designated pupil parking and drop off zone on Smith Avenue.
These works constitute the final works of the construction element of the £125m Western Isles Schools Project by main contractor FMP and which are now handed over to the Facilities Management contractor FES FM Ltd.
Cllr Norman A Macdonald, Chair of Sgoiltean Ùra said: “These works complete the construction element of the new schools project which has been completed on time and on budget. Our aim all along was to build state of the art schools fit for the 21st century – these works bring that aim to completion save for the playing fields at The Nicolson and Daliburgh which will be ready in Autumn 2014”.
Cllr Angus Campbell, Leader of the Comhairle said: “It is great to see the new schools in daily use and the feedback from pupils and parents has been very positive. The Comhairle has undertaken the biggest ever capital works project in the Western Isles, successfully completing 6 brand new schools whilst helping to sustain the local construction industry. As a community we should be very proud of this achievement in such challenging times”.
The new playing field will be seeded this Spring 2013 and should be playable by summer 2014.
