WESTERN Isles MP Angus MacNeil has today (Friday) welcomed the announcement from the UK Government that the coastguard emergency tugs will remain in the Western and Northern Isles for a further three months.
The contract ended two weeks ago, but an interim contract has now been put in place for a further three months.
Mr Angus MacNeil said: “While I welcome this announcement, why has it taken the UK Government a fortnight to put this interim contract in place, this is something that should have been arranged before the contract ended on the 30th September.
“ I would hope that the UK Government are now working hard to ensure that they’re will be future cover in the Western and Northern Isles after this interim contract comes to an end.”
It has been reported that the Anglian Monarch will operate from the Western Isles and Anglian Sovereign will cover the Northern Isles. The Anglian Monarch should be in Stornoway by Sunday night.
